Curious? (2020)

Traces

Inspired by writing discovered underneath cracked plaster on a wall in the Elizabethan House on the Barbican, these experiments aim to capture the essence of those kinds of traces left behind by people and to create the presence of someone or something that is no longer there.
Fabric and children’s clothing has been dipped in porcelain slip and then moulded while drying to create these empty forms. The porcelain has been fired to a high temperature to ensure it is translucent. When lit from inside the porcelain will emit a soft glow, as shown in the red piece, adding to the overall aura of the work.
