Paper Kiln (2020)
During lockdown Maris built a paper kiln in her garden so that she could fire her ceramic vessels.

Earlier in the year, her degree dissertation discussed the historical implications on modern day women's ill fitting personal protective equipment. In line with this for her final major project she has layered newspaper and clay over a wire structure to create a paper kiln as a physical metaphor for ill fitting women's PPE.

The layers wrap around and protect the inner structure, much like how PPE protects its wearer from hazards. Before firing the layers are complete and fit neatly over the frame. However during firing the thin layers of the paper kiln become more fragile and cracks appear in some places revealing wire frame underneath. By the end of the firing, the wire frame structure is no longer supported by its clay exterior and collapses onto itself under the weight of the combustible materials. Through this she aims to show the fragility of the human body and the danger posed by ill fitting PPE to those who wear it.
