These shards are the remnants of the paper kiln Maris built in her garden.

A paper kiln collapses when exposed to the destructive nature of fire during the firing. Through using this method of firing, Maris draws a parallel to the fragility of the human body and the danger posed to it by ill fitting personal protective equipment.

On some of the shards, the newspaper text has been transferred onto the ceramic and on others interesting, unrepeatable markings and colours have been created as the clay makes the change into ceramic.
